without ever mentioning the word "resolution" me and luís are trying to go to a museum or exhibition everytime we are together (museums have free entry every sunday morning). so since i arrived - already a month ago - we've been to: "ethnology museum", lisbon. the exhibition was about the portuguese clay-making tradition. it was really small and a bit boring, however, we were glued to two televisions that were showing old people working with both light and dark clay. it is very yummy just to look at it, and after we really wanted to put our hands in some claaaay. "museu da imagem", braga. we've seen a photo exhibition called "the american journey" by afonso malato de sousa. after it we were like two geeks on the streets with our new cameras. the photos were beautiful but what we admired the most was the nerve some photographers have to directly look at people and just take a photo. "MUDE", lisboa. this is the museum of design and fashion. it has some rather nice dresses and funny furniture. however, the temporary exhibitions are quite big and nice. i've enjoyed the interactive one, a collaboration with the london orchestra. "museu colecção berardo", lisboa. this week we went to see this exhibition about the portuguese comics/cartoons. it was really nice and i was surprised at how many good artists there are, most of them i have never heard of! there were old artists as well, with their original works exhibited. it was amazing to see the real paper with the real drawings. nice nice!
wee! as a late b-day gift, my sweet friend joui will be my company and "ticket supporter" in a joanna newsom concert! i'm very happy about this. the venue is great and i've been repeatedly listening to "have one on me" these last weeks!
we've seen her live once already and it was really sweet. i think i needed this and i didn't know! a concerrrrt! (i will receive some comments for a potential japanther one, let me wait, hehe) finally this movie was about teenagers studying in one of the best schools of central china.
how every minute is predicted and how from 7h to 23h they study evertime. this one i didn't understand more than half, but it is about a man whose parents and brother were killed by the khmer rouge.
for ten years already he goes every weekend to the province to interview the n.2 of the regime, to interview killers, to understand why did 2 million people get killed. such a persistence resulted in this eye-opening documentary. out of the four, this was the best documentary. it is really nerve racking and anguishing.
it tells the story of an old man and his son in law who decided to fight against mugabe's policies in the international court in namibia. mugabe has a policy called "zimbabwe for the zimbabwenians" and he is expelling all white farmers from their lands. this old man is a white african, born and raised in the country and he just wants justice - and not to be expelled based on his race. to do that he goes through threats, beatings and all sorts of things to prevent him from proceeding. it is about justice, safety and how to be brave. this week the documentary film festival "jeden svet" took place in bratislava and i went to see four movies. i have recently became more and more interested in documentaries so this was a true treat!
this was the first doc i saw with jarka. it was made by a girl from a roma family coming from bosnia but currently living in italia. it was really interesting to see her part of the family life, her ironic questions in the street and her comments. this girl is crazy about woody allen, and writes him a lot of letters that he never replies...she would like to be a movie director but her family is forcing her to get married because she is already 19..! you can see a lot more pictures in our website here! or in the 72hodin youtube channel for videos of the projects. in this project they were repainting the bridge; in this one they were reppairing the playground for children; and in here they were repainting the train stop! but there were so much more!
the "72 hodin bez kompromisu" happened already this past weekend! three days of a volunteering marathon nationwide ended in a better slovakia, with cleaner areas and prettier spaces. the projects were around 320 all across the country and they were all really great. our opening happened in trnavské myto, the most dirty and ugliest place in bratislava. why? it was already a project. our oppening was part of a project submitted by a youngster who decided to clean trnavske myto! and so, by the sound of music and photocameras (it had a very big media coverage - maybe because of the celebreties in overalls, maybe not) we all cleaned! there were about fifty people scrapping papers and cleaning graffities. it is now much much better! and in other places in slovakia the projects were very diverse! some repaired a playground; others cleaned and painted the cemetery's wall and gate; other taught funny ways of recycling; others cleaned green areas; others put new colors in the school! as you can imagine, in the end it is very rewarding to see all these projects happening, and to read that people would like to repeat it already next year!
last week we went to voices show. i'm glad i did, although at first i was not very excited about it. the concept is great and i have never seen it before! so, voices happen periodically and it's aim is to either promote events, or show videos about new things happening. in the middle, you can always listen to live new music. the thing i was most excited about was with this cardboard furniture made by a slovak designer. it is really, nice, cheap, ecological and lasts up to ten years. can you imagine moving your house with this? great, here is the website if you're curious. and these are "the uniques", which are very good. and a link for a video about "moustache", a band from dunajská streda.
