after the ethnology museum, and because we were so close, we decided to go to "pastéis de belém".
sorry for the bad quality photos but we only had our mobiles with us. after the ethnology museum, and because we were so close, we decided to go to "pastéis de belém". they are some very traditional conventual sweets made with puff pastry and egg cream. normally we eat it with cinnamon and sugar on top, and in here, they come warm straight from the oven every day. the secret here is that the recipe is, well, really secret. the sweets are so so good that noone can give the secret recipe away, people working there actually sign a statement saying they will never give it away! when the church separated from the state, and it's financing, they had to find a way to get money. in this case, the monks from the jerónimos monastery started making this delicious sweets that nowadays are still appreciated. it is always full at the entrance but if you go inside, you'll find a table for sure NHAM!

how cool is this, i am writing this in the bus from lisbon to braga, it has wi fi, woo-hoo! so, the central european dinner gathered my brave friends and was prepared by me and mini. i lived in slovakia and he lived in poland, so we decided to bring a bit of central european flavour! the preparation was long, especially for the desert. mini made blueberry pierogi that took a looong time to prepare! i was responsible for the garlic soup and the bryndzove..gnocchi. i decided not to make halusky! i brought a lot of bryndza from slovakia, i froze it to use in this dinner, it was ok. but i could not hold back some portuguese demosntrations! maybe now you will understand the 8 extra kilos in my suitcase. i really brought a lot of things. kofola was a sucess, my friends enjoyed it very much, and were very curious about the herbs that make it, can anyone tell me? altough everyone complained about their saltiness, the korbaciky disappeared, and the cheese contributed to some tongue malabarism. by joui, of course. during all dinner we had lucnica playing in the background - thanks lenka and richard! so, with everything in the table - it was maybe 22h o'clock - me and mini started explaining the dinner. i was really afraid and with low expectations, i though they wouldn't like anything! but they were really interested and attentive! and the garlic soup was very appreciated and some were not sure about the gnocchi with bryndza, but it all went down our throats as well! then the pierogi came for desert! together with figaro chocolates, mila and mata!
i was really glad they enjoyed it, now i need to start thinking about ways of getting bryndza...! ok. this even impresses the southern portuguese: papas de sarrabulho it's so good. but...the description might take you apetite, that's why foreigners simply should not know! it's just...a lot of meat and pieces of bread in blood of pork. on the side, we eat fried potatoes, fried blood, tripe and pork meat. mediterranean diet anyone? some random pics of the x-mas lights in my city. all pics by my brother. hope you've all had a warm christmas!
on the 25th, we had an unconventional lunch. this picture is very dramatic on purpose but...well, it's the truth, we ate a baby pig from mealhada, cooked on the stake it had a very pepperish sauce and it was really good, i don't remember having eaten it before, only when i was a child who didn't appreciate food stuff.
after almost making scrambled eggs carrying them for the 2h walk, they arrived safe to the pensión! my mission in brdárka was to make cheesecake! and so with the precious help of the people there - a lot this time! - it was done. they have an oven that takes a long long time to heat things. it took 3h30 to bake the cake. in the meantime, tiago tried to crochet; alban played the flute marta made in a workshop in sekier; and tiago brought tons of things from portugal to the table. result: eating good ol' bacalhau and eating as much smoked meat as possible and drinking a lot of portuguese liquors. i did not know, but i missed that! and while we waited, i hooked my first hat, after several attempts, that i gave to francesco and at eleven o'clock: the apple cheesecake, with apple jam made in brdárka on monday morning we worked a little bit, they worked a lot more and i took THE BUS home aaaaand feeling good
the cooks: yuliya and jarka the food: borsch (east-slavic soup) and proja (serbian corn bread with cheese). the main dish was my beloved mussaka! and cheesecake was the first success of the oven!
anthony was the last survivor of joana's hostel during the weekend. to celebrate this great accomplishment, he invited us for a delicious gnocchi! with potatoes, flour, salt and bryndza cheese, we made a strong and really good meal that i still remember now! i wonder where will i find bryndza in portugal. i think i'll need a secret exporter!
fortunatelly bratislava is a wine area. i'm happy not because of the wine, but because there is burciak before the wine! burciak is the "mosto" or the wine that still didn't fully fermentate. we drank white one, it was just like juice, delicious! so l. and r. invited me to a wine fair near karlov vés. i took s. and o. who were here on a visit. it was a real old fair like we have in s.joão or anywhere in august, yummy, the chewing gum music, the plastic toys, the food, the wine. loved it! after three bottles we were quite happy with anything, but it was really a great afternoon, in great company!
and for our last night together marie prepared a super dinner! i do not know the name of what we ate, but it was a lot, and always very good. there were the baguettes, the chicken à la basquese (?), the foundant, the cheeses. more, more!
