EVS?
whenever i experience something big i remember this song from cher that said "do you believe in life after love" ehehe. well, the sad thing is: my EVS is on it's final lap. it went so fast i cannot believe it. but i will not speak as if it's finished already because i still have three great weeks ahead! so, as this blog is supposed to be a testimonial of the life of the EVS, i have decided to keep it until i find a job in portugal. although i enjoy writing here, i really hope i can soon stop. let us see :) we went to maribor for a 72h international meeting and, behold, it was in slovenia that i saw the first snow of the winter! oh so beautiful! and right now it is snowing as well in bratislava!
finally this movie was about teenagers studying in one of the best schools of central china.
how every minute is predicted and how from 7h to 23h they study evertime. this one i didn't understand more than half, but it is about a man whose parents and brother were killed by the khmer rouge.
for ten years already he goes every weekend to the province to interview the n.2 of the regime, to interview killers, to understand why did 2 million people get killed. such a persistence resulted in this eye-opening documentary. out of the four, this was the best documentary. it is really nerve racking and anguishing.
it tells the story of an old man and his son in law who decided to fight against mugabe's policies in the international court in namibia. mugabe has a policy called "zimbabwe for the zimbabwenians" and he is expelling all white farmers from their lands. this old man is a white african, born and raised in the country and he just wants justice - and not to be expelled based on his race. to do that he goes through threats, beatings and all sorts of things to prevent him from proceeding. it is about justice, safety and how to be brave. this week the documentary film festival "jeden svet" took place in bratislava and i went to see four movies. i have recently became more and more interested in documentaries so this was a true treat!
this was the first doc i saw with jarka. it was made by a girl from a roma family coming from bosnia but currently living in italia. it was really interesting to see her part of the family life, her ironic questions in the street and her comments. this girl is crazy about woody allen, and writes him a lot of letters that he never replies...she would like to be a movie director but her family is forcing her to get married because she is already 19..! after almost making scrambled eggs carrying them for the 2h walk, they arrived safe to the pensión! my mission in brdárka was to make cheesecake! and so with the precious help of the people there - a lot this time! - it was done. they have an oven that takes a long long time to heat things. it took 3h30 to bake the cake. in the meantime, tiago tried to crochet; alban played the flute marta made in a workshop in sekier; and tiago brought tons of things from portugal to the table. result: eating good ol' bacalhau and eating as much smoked meat as possible and drinking a lot of portuguese liquors. i did not know, but i missed that! and while we waited, i hooked my first hat, after several attempts, that i gave to francesco and at eleven o'clock: the apple cheesecake, with apple jam made in brdárka on monday morning we worked a little bit, they worked a lot more and i took THE BUS home aaaaand feeling good
trying to get to brdárka on a sunday can either be a big no-no or a big yes-yes, it depends. for me it was the second one. after leaving kosice because of the exhibition, i met anthony-omolette-de-fromage in roznava. from there we caught a bus but...on a sunday, the closest to brdárka we could get was if we left in dobsina pila. so we did, and we walked and walked for circa 2 hours. we stopped often to admire the peaceful, autumn view. and almost arriving, the brdárka people met us, and it was a big and nice encounter, as it is always! and after...after it was bedárka all over again!
the EVS photo exhibition travelled all the way to kosice! thank you very much to justyna for the idea, priestor for the space and katka for the visit!
